The 1 Surprising Makeup Step You Should Never Skip

Stylisted - How To Choose The Right Blush

This summer, we’re all about the fuss-free. We’re taking on a relaxed approach to beauty – not that we’re not interested in it (that could never be the case!), we’re just using it to more strategically enhance rather than use every product we can. In an effort to streamline our stash, we decided to pick one product we couldn’t live without this summer. After weeks of trying to figure out what it could be, something donned on us in the middle of our normal routine. There was one product in particular that was making us blush (wink). And now that we’ve realized it, we just can’t get enough.

We reached out to Stylisted stylist, Christina Gauthier, to help us figure out more about the magical powers of blush and how to get the most of it.

Simply changing where you apply the product can make all the difference! Christina suggested applying blush on the outer portion of your cheek for a more sculpted look or focusing the color to the apples of the cheek for a more rounded, full look. You could even do as Charlotte Tilbury does, using a darker shade on the outer portions of the cheek and a brighter “pop” of blush on the apples (this is our personal favorite method).

First and foremost, makeup has no real rules. It’s supposed to be fun and experimental, so go with whatever your gut is telling you that day. However, if you crave a little bit of a guideline, we’ve paired some typical complexion shades with complementary blush tones below. If we missed your complexion, let us know and we’ll put together a part 2!

  • Very fair skin tone with red/pink undertones (think Amanda Seyfried/Emma Stone/Anne Hathaway) – cool pink like this
  • Light to medium skin tone (think Lauren Conrad/Alexa Chung/Jennifer Aniston) – peachy pink like this
  • Medium warm skin tone (think Eva Mendes/Jennifer Lopez/Mindy Kaling)  – peach with red undertones like this
  • Dark skin tone (think Lupita Nyong’o/Halle Berry/Kerry Washington) – vibrant colors like this
