Skincare is an important part of a daily self-care routine. Paired with a healthy diet and exercise, using the appropriate products will help keep your skin be bright, clear, and smooth. With an abundance of different products on the market, starting and maintaining a skincare routine may be confusing, though. Today we’re sharing our recommendations for a super simple skincare routine for the summer!

STEP 1: Cleanser

Cleansing your face gives you a fresh start to the morning and allows your skin to be rid of any oil, bacteria, or leftover makeup from the day when you cleanse at night. While there are many different types of cleansers, using a foaming cleanser will give you a deeper clean while being gentle on the skin (just make sure you look for one without foaming agents like SLS!). We recommend something like the CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, which does an amazing job at penetrating the pores to remove any impurities or left over makeup. This product also does not contain any added fragrances which is important to look for in your skin care products.

Tip: Apply your cleanser onto your face using your middle and ring finger and gently smooth the product onto your skin in circular motions. Using these two fingers will allow you to be gentler on your skin instead of aggressively rubbing the product in using both hands.

STEP 2: Moisturize

Regardless of the season, keeping your skin hydrated keeps it soft, smooth, and supple by increasing water content in the skin and attracting moisture from the air. Even if you have oily skin, moisturizing your skin daily helps to balance out the sebum level in your skin, which is the natural oily substance that our skin and hair produces. The misconception is that people with oily skin have too much hydration. In reality, oily skin is actually linked to hormonal changes, not a sign of hydrated skin, but a reaction to the lack of it. We recommend using a moisturizer with natural humectants that lock in moisture such as the Yes to Carrots Facial Moisturizer.

STEP 3: Protect

Especially during the summer season, our skin is exposed to harmful UVA/UVB rays from the sun. While sun exposure does give our bodies vitamin D, if we don’t use some sort of protection, the layer of dead skin will thicken and melanin pigments will form on the surface of our skin, leading to hyperpigmentation. Sunblock helps to protect our skin from damage and aging. We recommend using one with a broad spectrum such as the Mad Hippie 30+ Zinc Oxide Facial SPF, which is a chemical free sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVA rays.
