4 Steps to Better Lip Care

lip care lip scrub

We put a lot of TLC into our skin, hair, and nails, but sometimes we forget to give that same attention to our lips. There’s more to the perfect pout than a quick eos swipe or bold lip color.  We’re talking about lip care that exfoliates, nourishes and hydrates the lip area. Like our skin, lips need their own special care so here’s our quick four step check list (product recommendations included!) to ensure you’re ready to pucker up.

1. Lip Exfoliator

Exfoliating our lips removes dead skin, softens lip texture, and ensures a smooth lip color application.  Most lip exfoliators have a sweet taste, because many are made with sugar granules that slough off dead skin while softening the new skin layer. Be sure to use a scrub made specifically for lips since they are particularly delicate – but trust us, it never hurts!

Our favorites:

Sara Happ The Lip Scrub ($24)

Bliss Fabulips Sugar Scrub (on sale for $10, regular $18)

Fresh Sugar Lip Polish ($24)

e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator ($3)

2. Lip Treatments

Lip treatments are special because they address specific lip care concerns. Whether you suffer from a lack of moisture, wrinkles and fine lines, or want extra sun protection, there’s a lip treatment for out there for you.  Not trying to tackle anything specific? Some lip treatments simply help prevent lipstick from feathering and ensure a long wear (sold!).

Our favorites:

Clinique All About Lips ($23.50)

Smiths Rosebud Salve Tube ($6)

Repairwear Intensive Lip Treatment ($28)

3. Lip Balm

Give your lips the nourishment and hydration they need, along with chapped lip prevention, by using lip balm.  Lip balm repairs, hydrates, moisturizes, protects, and heals.  A no-brainer!

Our favorites:

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Intensive Lip Balm ($20)

Dr. Bronners Organic Lip Balm ($2.69)

Jack Black Intensive Therapy Lip Balm ($7.50)

4. Color

We all love a little color—that’s the fun part! It’s one of the quickest ways to give ourselves a little pep in our step and shift an overall makeup look. Try a color, lip balm, or all-in-one treatment. Wear color as bold as you dare on bare lips, over a lip liner, or even as a gloss over lipstick.

Our favorites:

Fresh Lip Treatment ($24)

BareMinerals Oil Lip Treatment ($16)

Sephora Collection Lip Balm & Scrub ($6)
